NGC and PCGS are the two most respected 3rd party grading services, and coins graded by them are considered to hold the highest values in their respective grades. Graded generics are known as semi-numismatic coins. They do have a certain level of collectible appeal, yet their values are still greatly influenced by bullion prices.
